How To Delete A ProtonMail Account

How to Delete a ProtonMail Account.

What Is A ProtonMail Account

A ProtonMail is an email provider that is secured and based in Switzerland, offering one of the best secure and free messaging solutions on the web. If you’ve ever run out of course with the service and wish to delete it, you can easily delete your account, but there are just a few caveats that you should keep in mind.

Before You Delete Your Account

There are so many reasons that you may want to delete your account, but if you’re doing it just for the re-registration of your username, be aware that ProtonMail policy may not allow this.

ProtonMail’s Policy Explains

We do not allow recycling of usernames, which means that the same username will not be available in the future. You cannot delete one username in order for you to recreate it with a different domain (@protonmail.com or @protonmail.ch). Once an account is created, the domain cannot be changed.”

How To Switch ProtonMail Domains

The only way that you can switch ProtonMail domains (e.g. from @protonmail.ch to @protonmail.com) is to buy a premium plan and add the corresponding address available as an alias.

You can merge the ProtonMail accounts, but be aware that you may lose all data associated with secondary accounts when completing the process. Another thing is that you will need to have a paid ProtonMail Plus subscription and you have to contact ProtonMail support from each of the accounts you would like to merge.

You can start the process of account merging by contacting ProtonMail via the support form.

How To Delete Your ProtonMail Account

To permanently delete your ProtonMail account,

1. First, log in with your password and username,

2. Then click on the "Settings" tab located at the top of the screen.

3. You will arrive on the “Account” tab in the sidebar to the left side of the screen.

4. Scroll down all the way to the Delete Account area and click the “Delete your account” button.

5. You will see a window pop up with a text field that will question why you are leaving, an email address field that you can leave should incase ProtonMail needs to contact you after, and a password field to do a verification of your decision.

6. When you’re set to pull the plug, hit the “Delete” button. According to the ProtonMail support, account for deletion to occur, it can take up to two weeks.

7. If you later decided to change your mind that you’ve made a mistake and would want to recover your account, all might not be lost. A comment that is left by ProtonMail on the related support document suggests that you can email a support for help with this.

Looking for Secure Email? You Can Still Consider Tutanota Instead

There is also another suggestion in place of Protonmail. That is If ProtonMail isn’t quite what you’d hoped for but you are still interested in using an email provider that is truly secure, why not try TuTanota
