How To Disable Categories In Google Messages On An Android Device

Google.

Google's Messages app, which is the default SMS client on many Android devices, includes a "Categories" menu at the top of the screen that allows you to organize your text messages. Fortunately, if this email-like feature isn't your cup of tea, you can turn it off by clicking here.

Since March 2022, Messages has displayed three "Categories" at the top of the inbox: "All," "Personal," and "Business," with the first being the most recent. There is no requirement for you to perform any manual sorting. In order to categorize your messages, Google will attempt to do so automatically.

If this feature sounds familiar, it's because it's very similar to Gmail's categories, which you can see here. It's possible that it's not as useful for SMS as you think. Let's get rid of it together.

To begin, open the Messages app and select the profile icon in the top-right corner.

Select "Messages Settings" from the drop-down menu.

Select "Messages Settings."

Navigate to the "Message Organization" section of the settings.

Go to "Message Organization."

Toggle the "View Messages by Category" switch to the off position.

Note: Unfortunately, you must have this enabled in order to use the "Auto-Delete OTPs After 24 Hours" feature, which can be found on the same screen as the previous one.

Turn off "View Messages by Category."

That is all there is to it. It is possible that your inbox will revert to its default layout, which does not include any categories at the top of the screen. Messages also includes some additional organization features that can assist you in keeping your workspace organized and easily accessible to you.
