How To Disable Your PC’s Power Button on Your Windows 10

If you ever for once shut down your computer accidentally by hitting the power button, there’s an easy way that you can disable the power button (or make it do something or become a different function) in Windows 10. You can also control your Sleep button, too, if your computer is equipped with one of those. Here’s how to do this.

For you to change the way your computer’s power button works in Windows 10 requires you taking a trip to your Control Panel.

1. First, launch Control Panel by opening the Start menu and then typing “control,” you can now hit Enter or click the Control Panel icon.

2. Open Start menu, type "control," then select the "Control Panel" icon.

3. In Control Panel, tap the “Hardware and Sound” button.

4. Once you have click the "Hardware and Control" in Control Panel, head straight to the power option.

5. Navigate through and locate the “Power Options” section then click “Change what the power buttons do.

6. In the Sound and Hardware, click the "Change what the power buttons do."

7. Next, you’ll notice a screen that defines what happens when you push the sleep or power buttons on your machine. Under the “Sleep and Power Button Settings,” tap the drop-down menu button that is beside “When I Press the Power Button.”

8. Click the drop-down menu beside "When I press the power button."

9. In the “When I Press the Power Button” menu, you will see different choices. Here’s what all the options do:

Do Nothing: When you push the power button, nothing will happen.

Sleep: Your PC will go into a low-power sleep mode but will still stay running.

Hibernate: Your PC will save the state that your system memory is on disk and then shuts down. You can resume your session anytime you feel like it or later on when you power back up your system.

Shut Down: This option will shut down the Windows and will power off your PC. (This is the default.)

Turn off the Display: Your display turns off, but your PC will still keep running.

If you want to avoid losing your work when you hit the power button mistakenly, choose any option that is other than the “Shut Down” button. Doing this will prevent accidental shutdowns. If you do not want any interruptions whatsoever as a result of hitting the power button, choose the “Do Nothing” button.

10. In the drop down menu, select any option other than "Shut Down."

11. Tap the “Save Changes” button and close the Control Panel.

Tip: To change anything that your computer’s Sleep button does, select an option from the “When I press the sleep button” drop-down box.

The next time you mistakenly press your PC’s power button, it won’t automatically shut down. If you chose “Do Nothing” in the last step, it is still possible for you to still shut down your PC when necessary by choosing “Shut Down” from the Start menu. Hope you have a wonderful day!
