1. Press the Windows Key + R, then type "gpedit.msc"(symbol not included), and tap Enter to open the Local Group Policy Editor.

2. Navigating the pane on the left-hand side, navigate to where you see Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Account Policies > Account Lockout Policy.

3. Tap on the "Account Lockout Policy key". There you should view the following three settings in the right-hand side pane: the Account lockout duration, the Account lockout threshold, and the Reset account lockout counter after.

The policy settings of Account lockout threshold allows you to be able to limit the number of login attempts on your PC. Users can not be able to access your locked account till when you reset it or the time that you’ve specified on the Account lockout duration policy setting has expired.

To configure the Account lockout threshold, you will have to set a value from 1-999. This number will be of help to you determining the number of allowed login attempts on your PC before your account will be finally locked. If you set the value to 0 it will not lock your account—regardless of the amount of password attempts someone makes.

1. Configuring this settings, double-tap on the Account lockout threshold policy setting.

2. Make a Specification of your desired lockout threshold value in your Account and it will lock out after box.

3. Tap Apply and then tap OK.

The Reset account lockout counter after policy setting enable you to determine the number of minutes that must be elapsed before your account can finally be locked. This setting requirements is for you to first determine the Account lockout threshold policy setting.

Making an example, you can just set your Account lockout threshold to either a five times attempts and then setting the Reset account lockout counter after the policy to a five minutes duration. This will enable the user to try five password attempts within the space of five minutes before your account goes locked. You can choose any specific number between one and 99,999 minutes duration when configuring the Reset account lockout counter after policy setting.

The Reset Account Lockout Counter

The Account lockout duration policy setting will determine the duration that your account will remain locked before it can automatically unlocks. Like that of the Reset account lockout counter setting, this setting's requirement is for you to determine the Account lockout threshold policy setting value.

For example, you can fix the setting of the Account lockout threshold to just five attempts and the Account lockout duration policy setting to only five minutes.

If an unknown user enters an incorrect password for up to five attempts, your account will automatically lock by itself for five minutes before it unlocks. You can set the duration depending on how long you want your account to lock, you can select a value between 1 and 99,999 minutes.
