iOS 14.5 added a surprising number of new features and benefits to your iPhone, one of the option to unlock it while your face is covered up.
Unfortunately, you would need a compatible Apple Watch for this particular trick to work, which not everyone presently have.
Perhaps you are wondering if your older Apple Watch would work, or you are just trying to figure out how to activate the feature.? Whatever your reason for being here, here is how to unlock your iPhone while you are wearing a mask in iOS 14.5.
For this particular system to work, you would need to download iOS 14.5. You would also need an iPhone that has Face ID, which means owning an iPhone X, and higher.
Next, you would need a compatible Apple Watch. It must also run watchOS 7.4 or later version.
How To Activate The Masked Face ID Feature On Your iPhone and Apple Watch
1. Open up your iPhone Settings application and go over to Face ID & Passcode. If you have synced your Apple Watch to this iPhone, it would appear under the 'Unlock with Apple Watch'. If you have not installed watchOS 7.4 yet, you will see 'Software Update Required' under it.
2. Toggle on this unlock option that is on in the Settings application. It would ask you whether or not you have the proper Apple Watch settings for this feature to work. In particular, your Apple Watch must have passcode protection enabled, and you must also have wrist detection turned on.
With this setting enabled, you are ready to test out this feature. It registers that that you are wearing a mask and uses your Apple Watch to unlock the screen, without using your Face ID profile to check for your identity.
One warning: because the iPhone does not check your facial features, anyone wearing a mask would be able to unlock your iPhone if you are nearby and wearing your Apple Watch.
1. Put on your Apple Watch and unlock it. Then put on a face mask and ensure that it is covering both your mouth and your nose; otherwise, Face ID might still try (and fail) to detect you.
2. Now, look over at your iPhone screen, which should quickly unlock. You will feel a buzzing on your wrist and your Apple Watch screen would say '[Your name's] iPhone. Unlocked by this Apple Watch' with a 'Lock iPhone' button beneath this message.
Keep in mind that this method would only gets you past this initial Face ID block. If you want to use another feature like Apple Pay that requires Face ID authentication, you will have to remove your mask or enter the passcode as per the usual.
