The Installation of Equiano internet cable in Togo was funded by Google

As part of its commitment to invest $1 billion in Africa last October, Google, the Togolese Republic, and CSquared announced in a joint statement to Technext that Equiano, a subsea internet cable that will provide Africans with faster and more affordable internet, has arrived in Togo, accelerating the country's digitalization. Equiano, a subsea internet cable that will provide Africans with faster and more affordable internet, will provide Africans with faster and more affordable internet. Portuguese-speaking countries are connected to South Africa, which is then connected to Togo.

A portion of the statement reads, "The subsea cable will have a direct impact on Togo's Internet connectivity, resulting in faster, more affordable internet access for millions of Togolese and West Africans."

Later this year, according to the statement, Google intends to expand Equiano's reach to include the countries of South Africa, Namibia, Nigeria, and St. Helena.

According to a report commissioned by Google from Africa Practice and Genesis Analytics, the company's move will have a significant positive impact on the country's economy, creating over 37,000 jobs and increasing GDP by USD 351 million between 2022 and 2025, among other things.

Additionally, according to the statement, Togo is currently ranked as the "sixth best country in Africa in terms of ease of doing business," making it one of the most advantageous locations for Google to launch its initiative. Togo is ranked eighth on Business Insider's list of the best African countries to do business in, despite the fact that the World Bank ranked the country as the fifth-best African country in terms of economic governance efficacy just a year ago in its Africa's Pulse report.

Google's commitment to Africa

It was with great pleasure that Nitin Gajria, managing director of Google Sub-Saharan Africa, announced that Equiano had made his debut in Togo.

In a statement, he stated that "the landing of Equiano demonstrates Google's commitment to Africa and its digital transformation." He also stated that Google is "delighted that Togo will be Equiano's first African landing, as it aligns with the country's ongoing efforts to promote digital inclusion for Africa." "We look forward to working closely with Togo's government and Ministry of Digital Economy and Transformation as they continue to develop their digital infrastructure," he concluded.

Deputy Minister Cina Lawson stated that "expanding access to high-speed internet is a critical component of our country's digital development process as we strive to achieve the goals outlined in our Digital 2025 Strategy." Cina Lawson is Togo's Minister of Digital Economy and Digital Transformation.

The collaboration with Google and CS will help Togo continue to establish itself as a regional and international digital hub and a favorable ecosystem for innovation and investment.

As the minister stated, "Togo's commitment to improving public and social services for all citizens so that they can benefit economically is demonstrated by the successful landing of Equiano."

The statement also states that Equiano will provide "20 times the bandwidth of any other cable currently serving West Africa," allowing Togo to become the region's fastest and most efficient internet provider, according to the statement.
