Twitter is testing a new feature for sending money to your favorite accounts

Twitter has begun rolling out a new Tip Jar feature on its Android and iOS apps, which will enable users to send money directly to their favorite accounts, as previously reported.

To access the tip jar, tap on the newly added dollar bill icon next to a user's username while viewing their profile on one of Twitter's mobile apps. Additionally, users will be able to toggle the tip jar feature (for those individuals or organizations who do not want people randomly sending them cash). Additionally, Android users will be able to send money through Twitter's Clubhouse-style Spaces.

Tip Jar accepts payments via Bandcamp, Cash App, Patreon, Paypal, and Venmo. Twitter makes payments through those services' external payment processors; it does not take a cut. Starting today, all English-language Twitter users can send tips, but only a select group (including "creators, journalists, experts, and nonprofits") can turn on the feature that allows them to accept money.

For years, users have used Twitter to solicit tips or Patreon followers — at this point, concluding viral threads with a shoutout to a SoundCloud account is practically a meme. As a result, it's understandable that Twitter would want to streamline the feature as part of its own app.

More About Tip Jar

Notably, the only way you can access Tip Jar at the moment is via a user's profile. That means that paying someone for a truly amazing tweet will still require a little more effort than simply liking or retweeting it.

There are already a few kinks in place that Twitter will need to iron out. As Rachel Tobac noted, sending tips via Paypal via Tip Jar currently allows the sender to view the recipient's address, which is a concerning security flaw that Twitter and Paypal are working to resolve.

Twitter stated that "more is coming soon," implying that we will likely hear more about how Twitter is implementing tipping in the coming weeks and months.
