Twitter users to reportedly pay $2.99 for subscription service
According to a tweet from reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong on May 15, 2021, Twitter Blue — a new subscription service that could cost users $2.99 per month — could be coming to Twitter soon. Paid features such as Undo Tweets and Collections will be available.
Undo Tweet, as the name implies, assists users in undoing a tweet. On the other hand, collections will enable users to save and organize tweets.
Additionally, Wong mentioned that the social media platform could implement a tiered pricing model in which users who pay the most benefit from Twitter Blue. This is not, however, the first time she has announced the Undo Tweets feature. When we first reported on her tweets about it in February, the service's name and price were unknown.
With Twitter looking for new revenue streams, Twitter Blue would be a logical move. Recently, the platform announced Super Follows, Tip Jars, and Spaces — all of which are subscription-based features.
Along with Twitter Blue, Wong mentioned Scroll, another subscription-based feature that enables users to read news without distractions.
While she did not specify when Twitter would launch the subscription service, she did state that the feature's name, pricing, and feature set are subject to change.
In Conclusion
Twitter's paid subscription models are unprecedented in the social media world. While it may be introducing these features to generate revenue, users may find paying for social media services unusual. One cannot help but wonder if Twitter's user base can be retained through paid subscriptions.
