What Is A Modular Smartphone And How Does It Work?

A Modular Smartphone is a smartphone that is made of components that can be independently replaced or easily upgraded as modules. The aim of Modular Smartphones is to reduce electronic waste, to lower the cost of repair and to increase user comfort.

The most important component of the phone is the main board, to which others (such as the batteries or cameras) are attached. These components are packaged in an easy-to-remove modules which can be replaced if there be any need for replacement without having to rework the soldering. Components is available and you can obtain it from any open-source hardware stores.

How Does A Modular Phone Work?

Various individual components can be fixed into the main body of a modular phone, so it is very possible for you to customise it to suit your purpose. These components are available across a wide range functions of the mobile phone, with the modules that are for digital GPS, additional storage, extra batteries and cameras. By adding modules, it is possible for you to create your own smartphone – such as making an exchange for the camera, exchanging the battery with an extra battery for a longer life.

Central of all this modular design is the phone operating system’s ability to recognise and to use the new module. Also adding a Bluetooth module would tell the software that it can now make use of Bluetooth, and ensure that it appears on the phone’s interface as an option.

What Are The Advantages Of A Modular Phone?

Modular phones offer lots of advantages over the regular smartphones, although some are less obvious:

1. Future proofing

As modules are swap able, also manufacturers of mobile phone can release new modules as technology updates or can become even cheaper. Rather than for you to buy a completely new mobile phone to get a better digital camera, a module phone allows you to replace the old camera module with a newer, improved version. A good example of this is the 5G add-on for Motorola's modular Moto Z range.

2. Lower repair bills

If your mobile phone camera gets broken, you could experience a costly repair bill or even have to buy a new phone. Even batteries are costly to replace these days. A modular phone makes it easier and quicker to swap out the broken component.

3. Reduce electronic waste

Mobile phones contain lots of different toxic components that can be hazardous to the environment, and the regular upgrade cycle of the mobile phones means that many discarded mobile phones ends up in landfill. By permitting mobile phones to be cheaply upgraded, there’s actually less need to throw away the entire phone, lowering the waste in both manufacturing a new phone and the recycling of the old one.
