Exploring the Annapurna Sanctuary – Hiking to ABC

One of the most popular trekking routes in Nepal, the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek is a fantastic way to see the country's stunning Himalayas.

Located in the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary, this trek takes you from lush green valleys all the way up to the base of the world's tenth highest mountain, Annapurna.

Poon Hill

The Poon Hill trek is a short, easy mountain trek that’s perfect for beginners and young travelers. The trail connects several quaint villages and takes you through forests, farmland, and ridgelines.

It’s a rewarding hike that will take you to the breathtaking viewpoint of Poon Hill. From here, you’ll have a panoramic view of the Annapurna mountains including Machhapuchhre.

You’ll also get a chance to see the sun rise over a magnificent backdrop of the Himalayas. It’s an incredible experience to watch the golden rays of the rising sun shine on snow-capped peaks and the valleys below.

The best time to go on a trek to Poon Hill is autumn (September, October, November) and spring (March, April). These months have moderate temperatures, low precipitation, and crisp views of the mountain ranges.

Rhododendron Forest

Rhododendron forests, like all temperate rainforests, provide habitat for a variety of wildlife species. They are especially important for Himalayan black bears, red pandas and musk deer.

In addition, rhododendron thickets offer food for blood pheasants and monal, and serve as habitat for tragopan.

However, rhododendrons did not become widespread on Earth until about 50 million years ago. At that time, there were a few vegetational zones ranging from North America and Eurasia to the region of extreme relief (Fig. 5(a)).

The climatic conditions of this region were favorable for rhododendrons, and they spread quickly. Nevertheless, in some areas of high altitudes, harsh conditions prevailed at the same time that Tibet began to rise (Fig. 8). This allowed populations in valley bottoms to migrate downhill into lower, more favorable terrain; species could then cross over after long intervals of separation to produce new hybrids that would form the basis of future rhododendron varieties.

Machhapuchhre Base Camp

Machhapuchhre Base Camp is one of the most scenic hiking trails in Nepal. It offers wilderness experience and captivating views of Annapurna massif including Mt. Dhaulagiri, Himal Chuli, and Annapurna South.

It’s a moderate difficulty trek, which is perfect for fit and healthy trekkers of all ages. The trek also takes you through rhododendron forests that are home to a variety of animals like snow leopards and musk deer.

From Machhapuchhre Base Camp and Poon Hill Trek, you can take amazing pictures of the stunning peaks that line up along your trek route. These mountains include Annapurna I, II, III, and IV; Dhaulagiri; Himal Chuli; Lamjung Himal; Tukuche Peak; and Hiunchuli.

The trek begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, which is the gateway to Annapurna region. Upon arrival, you’ll have time to relax, explore the beautiful lakeside city or enjoy rafting and cycling in the valley.

Annapurna Base Camp

If you want to explore the Annapurna Sanctuary, you'll need to Hike to Annapurna Base Camp  (ABC). This out-and-back trek offers a thrilling experience with incredible views of soaring snow-capped peaks.

You'll need to prepare a few things before you head on the trail. First, you'll need to pack the appropriate equipment.

For example, you'll need to bring a backpack and a pair of trekking boots. Depending on the season, you may also need a sleeping bag and a lightweight raincoat.

Next, you'll need to find a place to stay. Fortunately, there are many options to choose from along the trail.

You can choose from several lodges and tea houses. The cost depends on the time of year and altitude, but most will charge you a reasonable price. It's best to book your accommodations in advance. This is especially true if you're planning to trek during high trekking seasons, like March-May and September-December.
