Lemonade Finance has received $725k in pre-seed funding

Pre-seed funding of $725,000 has been announced for Lemonade Finance, a startup that enables Africans living abroad to send and receive money from home.

It was announced that YCombinator, an American startup accelerator, as well as venture capital firms Microtraction, Ventures Platform, and Acuity Venture Partners were among those who participated in the funding round. In addition, there were a number of other individual investors who joined the round.

In an interview with Technext, Ridwan Olalere, co-founder of Lemonade, stated that the new fund will allow the team to strengthen its bench, improve the app's features, and expand its geographic coverage.

When former Opay employees Rian Cochran and Ridwan Olalere realized that many Africans in the diaspora were experiencing difficulties with payments while working on a project, they founded Lemonade the following year. They created a fintech product that enables Africans to send and receive money from their home countries in an efficient, affordable, and timely manner, all while remaining in their home countries.

While discussing the company's future in a market that is crowded with competitors such as ChipperCash, Fliqpay, and Afriex, Ridwan explained that Lemonade stands out because it allows users to keep their balances in the currencies that are important to them.

'A Nigerian who uses Lemonade in the United Kingdom can easily convert between the Pound Sterling and the Nigerian Naira,' says the company. Furthermore, users can transfer money back and forth from Nigeria without having to wait for days on end "He comes to a conclusion.

It was intentional, according to the co-founders of the startup, Ridwan Olalere and Rian Cochran, to be flexible in the development of the app, and it was at the heart of the team's thinking while developing the app.

Furthermore, Ridwan spoke about the platform's effectiveness, which he claims is supported by a number of testimonials from Nigerians, particularly those who have settled in Canada:

Y Combinator's Summer 2021 (S21) cohort, which began in June, accepted Lemonade as one of nine African startups to join the program.

In response to our question about the impact of this on the team's development and efficiency, Ridwan stated that it had been a "fantastic learning experience." These individuals pushed us to think outside the box and assisted us in developing a more focused approach to the issue at hand. Since then, the network community has been nothing short of incredible."

In a statement, Microtraction and Ventures Platform express their belief in the critical nature of Lemonade's solution. Dayo Koleowo, the Managing Partner of Microtraction, made the following statement:

"Lemonade's solution is perfectly appropriate in every way. In their capacity as a multi-currency financial service provider, they make it simple for members of the African diaspora to send and receive money from their new country of residence, which is remarkable. We believe that Rian and Ridwan possess the technical and financial expertise required to establish Africa's premier cross-border neo-banking organization."

Lemonade Finance is now operational in Canada, a country with a growing African population, and is a subsidiary of Lemonade Capital. Moreover, Ridwan stated that the company is preparing to launch in the United Kingdom, which is another country with a significant African population. He made the implication that the team is on the verge of establishing a presence in Ghana.

Kayode Oyewole, a Ventures Platform partner, went on to say the following:

"This is an exciting time to be a part of the Lemonade team as they develop a compelling financial product to serve the over 100 million Africans living in the diaspora who currently do not have access to high-quality financial products. With extensive experience in building and scaling products to millions of users, the company's founders are considered industry legends."
