Twitter is finally letting everyone apply for verification
How It Works
After a four-year suspension, Twitter is resuming its public verification program. The program was created to enable anyone to apply for the coveted blue checkmark on Twitter.
Also, the launch includes the introduction of new application criteria and guidelines for verified accounts.
Requirements for verification
The redesigned verification criteria include having a public interest account that falls into one of six distinct categorizations.
The following six types of accounts are eligible for verification:
• Government
• News organizations and journalists
• Companies, brands and organizations
• Sports and gaming
• Entertainment
• Activists, organizers, and other influential individuals
Likewise, the account must be complete – that is, it must include a profile name, an image, and a confirmed email address or phone number. The account must have been active in the last six months and demonstrate a commitment to following Twitter's rules.
How To Apply
Three stages must be completed in order to apply for the Twitter blue tick. The first step is to launch the application directly from the Account Settings tab by selecting the verification application.
After selecting it, a page titled "Tell us who you are" will open in which you will select which of the above categories you fall under. Following that, you'll be directed to "Identity Verification," where you'll enter information about a government-issued identification card, an official email address, and an official website.
After that, your application will be automatically logged in. Twitter states that they will respond via email within a few days, but it may take up to a few weeks depending on the volume of applications they are reviewing.
When your application is approved, the blue badge appears on your profile automatically. If your application is rejected, Twitter states that you have 30 days to reapply.
P.S. Do not panic if you have not yet received the verification application. Twitter says it will gradually roll it out to everyone in order to ensure applications are reviewed in a timely manner.
New guidelines for verified accounts
Twitter has begun enforcing the updated policy against verified accounts as part of its new guidelines. This means that verified accounts that no longer meet the updated criteria, such as those that are inactive or have an incomplete profile, will automatically lose their blue tick.
In addition, the guideline line states that verified accounts should follow the philosophy of leading by example, Tweet others the way they want to be Tweeted, and contribute to the public conversation authentically, respectfully, and thoughtfully.
Additionally, it stated that all accounts, including verified accounts, must adhere to Twitter's Terms of Service. Accounts that violate the Twitter Rules on a consistent basis may lose their blue badge.
Twitter blue tick and why verification was suspended
Twitter launched the original verification program in 2009 to validate the identities of high-profile users who were "at risk of impersonation." However, the verification process was ambiguous, with no straightforward application procedure.
In 2016, the social network launched a public verification program but suspended it in 2017 following widespread criticism for verifying a white supremacists account.
Twitter attempted to clarify its rules regarding which accounts are eligible for verification at the time, but it has evolved into a badge that is interpreted as an endorsement by Twitter.
While Twitter's public verification program was suspended, certain accounts, such as those of politicians, large companies, and those publishing information about the pandemic, continued to be manually verified.
However, the method by which Twitter selected those who would receive the badge was always a point of contention.
Twitter introduced a new verification policy in January 2021 and, after several months, says it has worked to clarify the eligibility criteria for verification and has launched a new policy shaped by public feedback.
Along with the new verification application, Twitter is previewing some profile changes it is considering, including the addition of an About tab and the upcoming automated account label.
