The Internet Archive Restarts as a Read-Only Platform After Cybersecurity Incidents

The Internet Archive, a vital digital library and the operator of the Wayback Machine, has resumed operations in a limited, read-only state following a cyberattack that disrupted its services last week. On October 9th, a combination of a data breach and a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack forced the site offline, resulting in the theft of a user authentication database that contained sensitive information from 31 million unique accounts.

Brewster Kahle, the founder of the Internet Archive, announced that the platform is now operational in a “provisional, read-only manner.” He emphasized that while it is safe to access, users should be aware that further maintenance might be necessary, which could lead to additional temporary suspensions of service.

Currently, users can access the Wayback Machine to search through an extensive archive of 916 billion web pages, allowing them to retrieve information and historical content from the internet's past. However, the functionality to capture new or existing web pages into the archive is temporarily disabled. This restriction is part of the ongoing efforts by Kahle and his team to restore services securely while examining vulnerabilities that could lead to future attacks. Recently, they have successfully reinstated the team's email accounts and crawlers used for gathering data from national libraries.

The cyberattack was highlighted by a pop-up from a hacker claiming that the Internet Archive experienced a “catastrophic security breach.” This claim was later substantiated by Have I Been Pwned, a data breach notification service, which confirmed the theft of personal data, including email addresses, screen names, hashed passwords, and other internal information related to the affected accounts.

This outage occurred shortly after Google had begun incorporating links to archived websites through the Wayback Machine. Earlier this year, Google had removed its own cached pages from search results, making the Wayback Machine’s integration particularly useful for users seeking older versions of websites or archived pages.
