How To Turn off Your Google Assistant Power Button on Your Android

Google Assistant is known as an artificial intelligence that is powered by the virtual assistant developed by Google. It is primarily available on the mobile and on the smart home devices. Unlike the previous virtual assistant that Google company once created, known as Google Now, the Google Assistant can now engage in a two way conversation.

There are multiple ways that you can begin a launch on your Assistant on Pixel smartphones and the Android devices. The list of this options increased with the release of the Android 12. Instead for you to start long-pressing the Side button to open up a power menu, the Pixels default to launching your Google Assistant. Thankfully, now it is very possible for you to navigate through the settings and you can now disable this feature.

Like that of Apple and Samsung, the change that is introduced in the Android 12 enables you to launch the Google Assistant at least on the Pixel phones, by just long pressing the physical power button on your phone. Up until its release, making use of the long-pressing technic of the power button is how you can restart the phone. Thankfully, it is now pretty easy to reverse this functionality and to get back the old action.

Note: This kind of behavior does not appear  and it is not enabled on the devices that have been upgrade to Android 12, but likely it is to be the default on phones and on tablets especially on the Pixels that launch with the Android 12 or higher. It will be up to a device’s manufacturer to program the default function and how the device will behave.

Getting Started

1. First, you need to swipe down (once or twice all depending on your device’s OEM) from the top of your screen to reveal your Quick Settings. Now click the gear icon to open the Settings app.

2. You can swipe down on your Android device's home screen to open the quick settings and then you click the gear icon

3. In the Settings menu, just navigate to the “System” section.

4. When navigate to the "System" section, Next you go to the “Gestures.”

5. Navigating to the "Gestures" section, then you choose the “Power Menu” option located at the bottom of the list.

6. Now choose the "Power Menu" located at the bottom of the list, then finally, all you will need to do here is for you to toggle off the switch for “Hold for Assistant.

7. You just need to Toggle off the switch for "Hold for Assistant"

That’s it! The power button will then bring up the normal traditional “Power Off” and the “Restart” options that you are used to. This kind of small changes like this can be frustrating, so it is nice that it can at least be disabled.

With the feature that can now be turned off, there are still other ways to launch the Google Assistant easily.
